Baby Sign Language Allowed Us to Know What She Was Thinking

We started teaching Baby Sign Language to Olivia, our firstborn when she was about three months old. She was very responsive and started signing back to us around 7 months old. Typically, she would sign “milk” when she wanted to nurse. She would sign “please” when she was prompted to regarding her desire to get another cookie or such.

I will never forget the time when she was 10 months old. My husband and I were walking across the parking lot of a Walmart Super Market in Bainbridge, Georgia. The sun was setting on the horizon located directly behind the store. The sky was a bright variety of pink and orange colors on that Friday evening. While in the arms of her Daddy, Olivia excitedly pointed to the sky and then put her little finger to her cheek and signed “pretty”. It was incredible! She was not speaking yet. However, she could tell us that she thought the sunset in the South Georgia sky on that Friday evening was “pretty”.

If I had not ever taught her Baby Sign Language, she would not have been able to tell me that she thought the sunset was pretty. We would have never known her thoughts.

Baby Sign Language changes how you communicate with your baby. It. Is. Amazing.
