My name is Erin Simpson.
After 15 years as a classroom teacher, 6 years as a school instructional coordinator, and 16 years of being a mother, I have read, studied, and witnessed the positive impact of adequate brain stimulation from birth to five years of age. Those first five years of life set the foundation for the type of learner a child will become.
Why am I so passionate about small children and how they learn? I have loved little people for as long as I can remember. I was born to teach young children. I can remember sitting on my dad’s lap telling him I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. I knew I wanted to teach young children in addition to having children of my own. Even as a first-generation college student, attending college was a non-negotiable. It was what I had to do to become a teacher of young children.
The road to becoming a teacher was easier than the journey to becoming a mother.
After months of disappointing negative pregnancy tests and two miscarriages within a two-year window, God blessed us with our first baby in 2007. We welcomed our second baby in 2009 without any problems. After trying for a third little one and being unsuccessful, we were told the in-vitro fertilization process would be our best option. We chose to be grateful for what we were already given. Much to our surprise, in 2015 we were blessed with a healthy baby boy. Like all mothers, I consider my children a gift and my greatest calling. I strived to give them my best from the very beginning. Baby Sign Language was a big part of the early years with each one.
Why incorporate Baby Sign Language? I used sign language with all three of our children, starting at birth, to be able to communicate with them at an earlier age. It was an incredible experience with each child. All three of my children developed language skills at an earlier age. All three have been honor roll students their entire time in school. All three of them qualified for the gifted acceleration program within our public school system. I know, without a doubt, that BABY SIGN LANGUAGE strongly contributed to their success.
Time and time again, I have witnessed young children entering the world of K-12 school unprepared for the rigorous world of education. They enter school at risk and struggle to overcome those deficits. The outcome of a student entering school “at-risk” typically results in year after year challenges with an end result of student and parent frustration and defeat.
